Rory O'Neill, também conhecido pelos seus nomes artísticos Panti, Panti Bliss e Pandora Panti Bliss, é uma drag queen e ativista dos direitos gays de Ballinrobe, Condado de Mayo, Irlanda.

BIOGRAFIA

O'Neill, filho de um veterinário, cresceu em Ballinrobe, County Mayo, e foi para a faculdade de artes em Dún Laoghaire. Embora tenha sido criado como católico, O'Neill é ateu. O'Neill conversou com Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin sobre ter sido diagnosticado como HIV positivo em 1995 na série Aoibhinn and Company da RTÉ Radio 1.

CARREIRA

O'Neill (sob seu nome artístico Panti) é considerado a principal drag queen da Irlanda. Panti é a abreviação de 'Pandora Panti Bliss'. A primeira apresentação de drag de O'Neill foi em 1989. Ele dançou no palco no Japão com Cyndi Lauper durante sua turnê Twelve Deadly Cyns de 1994.

O'Neill (em seu disfarce de Panti) regularmente apresenta as celebrações anuais do Orgulho de Dublin, que acontecem em junho de cada ano. De 1996 a 2012, ele apresentou o concurso anual Miss Irlanda Alternativa.

Por vários anos, O'Neill (como Panti) apresentou um programa semanal de karaokê, The Casting Couch, no pub The Front Lounge, em Dublin. Ele ocasionalmente aparece como Panti no show semanal de bingo drag queen do Shirley Temple Bar, no bar gay The George, em Dublin.

Em 30 de novembro de 2007, inaugurou o autointitulado "Pantibar" na Capel Street, 7, Dublin. Mais tarde, assumiu o bar de coquetéis Pennylane, localizado na Great Strand Street, 2, em 2020. Em 2023, participou da sexta temporada do Dancing with the Stars, em parceria com o dançarino ucraniano Denys Samson. Terminou a competição em 6º lugar em 5 de março. Em 2024, O'Neill foi o Grande Marechal da Parada do Dia de São Patrício em Londres.

INCIDENTES

Comentários sobre homofobia na RTÉ ("Pantigate"): Em 11 de janeiro de 2014, O'Neill apareceu no The Saturday Night Show da RTÉ com Brendan O'Connor, onde ele e O'Connor discutiram homofobia, e O'Neill alegou que algumas pessoas específicas envolvidas no jornalismo irlandês eram homofóbicas. Isso ficou conhecido como "Pantigate".

Os mencionados ameaçaram a RTÉ e O'Neill com uma acção judicial. A RTÉ removeu posteriormente essa secção da entrevista do seu arquivo online. No episódio de 25 de Janeiro do Saturday Night Show, O'Connor emitiu um pedido público de desculpas em nome da RTÉ aos mencionados por O'Neill na entrevista realizada duas semanas antes. A RTÉ pagou 85.000 euros aos nomeados por O'Neill.

Os pagamentos foram posteriormente discutidos pelos membros do Oireachtas. O incidente também foi discutido no Parlamento Europeu. com o eurodeputado irlandês Paul Murphy, chamando o pagamento de "um verdadeiro ataque à liberdade de expressão" e afirmando "Quando John Waters diz que o casamento gay é 'uma espécie de sátira', isso é homofobia. Quando Breda O'Brien diz que 'a igualdade deve ficar em segundo lugar em relação ao bem comum', isso é homofobia. Quando o Instituto Iona faz campanha contra o casamento gay porque é um casamento gay, isso é homofobia." O chefe de televisão da RTÉ defendeu o pagamento de € 85.000, afirmando que isso economizou à RTÉ "um múltiplo absoluto" no longo prazo.

Discurso de Chamada Nobre: Em 1 de fevereiro de 2014, O'Neill (como Panti) fez um discurso Noble Call no Abbey Theatre em resposta aos eventos em torno da controvérsia da RTÉ, que obteve mais de 200.000 visualizações em dois dias. Em dezembro de 2018, o vídeo tinha quase 1 milhão de visualizações. O discurso foi descrito como "o discurso irlandês mais eloquente" em quase 200 anos por Fintan O'Toole e obteve o apoio de Dan Savage, RuPaul, Graham Norton, Stephen Fry, Madonna e outros. Camisetas com "Estou no time Panti" foram vendidas como arrecadação de fundos para o BeLonG To Youth Services, arrecadando mais de € 10.000. Em março de 2014, a dupla inglesa de pop eletrônico Pet Shop Boys lançou o discurso, acompanhado de sua música, como "Oppressive (The Best Gay Possible)", eles seguiram com uma "mixagem lenta" da faixa e um vídeo acompanhante com uma "montagem de clipes relacionados à homofobia". O'Neill mais tarde doou o vestido que usou no Noble Call para o Museu Nacional da Irlanda, onde foi exibido sobre a história LGBTI+ na Irlanda.
